Hello Kitty & Friends at Royal/T

Long overdue post on the Hello Kitty 35th Anniversary event at Royal/T…

My friend Taryn and I hit up Royal/T on the day before the Hello Kitty exhibit was to end.  Bad idea.  It took us close to three hours to get inside!  It was all good though cause the cutest little girl was in line behind me.

Baby Avery was giving high fives to anyone and everyone that would give her love. I snapped a few photos of her and the next thing you know, I’m holding her in my arms and she’s giving me kisses on my cheek! She was so adorable rockin’ her baby skinny jeans!

When we finally arrived inside, we were blown away by the Hello Kitty collection on display.  It’s crazy how this little white cat with the bow has trascended its Japanese origins to become one of pop culture’s most revered icons.  Look see here…

And that wasn’t even 1/10 of what was on display… it was absolutely nuts.

If you’ve never been to Royal/T before, do yourself a favor and GO!  A triple threat of café/shop/art space, it is LA’s first Japanese style cosplay café… and in Royal/T’s case, they’re all dressed up as maids.  You’d think with the Hello Kitty exhibit and Japanese maids galore that the place would be running amok with Asians.  My white friends, I’d like to reassure you that there were more non-Asians there than there were… Asian-Asians (?) so you need not fear the Yellow Fever.  In fact, one of the cutest maids was this really tall white girl.  In fact again, Royal/T was created and is owned by Susan Hancock (not Asian at all).  One thing I did think was kinda weird were these middle-aged white women decked out in Hello Kitty bling! I’m talking jewel encrusted Hello Kitty necklaces, broches, earrings, rings, etc.!!  I wanna say act your age but I act like I’m 5 all the time so what do I know.

Oh yeah, there’s food too!  The menu looked good but we didn’t have much time (Manny Pacquiao was fighting that night), so we ordered the Hello Kitty sampler, got our grub on, then bounced.  Ps. Chef Ludo is settin’ up shop in December for Ludo Bites! Pps. All dinner reservations are currently full =(
