Contest Winner | Sasa Stankovic… and Human Motivation

Last week, I hosted my first contest giving one lucky reader a chance to win my first print. I had a total of 32 entries from 20 different people. I find it mind-bottling (yes, mind-bottling) that I had so few entries considering I’m friends with over 1100 people on Facebook. I find it even more mind-bottling that I had several hundred hits on the actual post for the contest, yet only had 9 comments (most of those comments were attributed to my awesome friend Stephanie of Paisley Petunia fame who went out of her way to retweet and repost my contest to all her friends… she is undoubtedly my #1 supporter… you’re the best Steph!). If you looked at the post, why not just make a comment and enter yourself into the contest? I mean, I was giving away an 18″ x 24″ print. Did I do something wrong? For those of you who have hosted contests in the past, what pointers would you give me?

There were five different methods to winning and Sasa completed two of them… and he did them the day before the contest was to end! The first thing he asked me when I dropped off his print was if I rigged it. HAHA! I love you Sasa, but no, I didn’t. Cause I also love everyone else who entered equally! Here’s the evidence:

I have a degree in psychology from UCLA and I was quite disappointed in myself for not being able to generate more contest entries. Who doesn’t like free stuff? And I made it easy to enter. All my schooling and I still don’t understand human motivation? I posted a status update regarding Coconut M&Ms and I get 9 responses to that for goodness sake! Across Twitter and Facebook, people spend an inordinate amount of time typing FML and SMH about how they hate their jobs or how bad the traffic is and I really want to tell them to shut their faces. People around the world are facing situations much more dire than you being stuck in traffic or swamped with work. Be grateful that you even have a car and a job. Since when did being negative and garnering sympathy become trendy? I guess I should be grateful that people even read my blog so I really shouldn’t complain about not having more contest entries.

Anyhow……. Sasa is the mastermind behind Metro Cafe, hands down my favorite go-to restaurant in LA. I highly recommend the lamb osso bucco, it’s my favorite dish and I get it literally every single time I go. I won’t delve too much into his restaurant, I’ll save that for a featured post in the near future. For the time being, when you go (and you will), get the grilled corn salad to start off and the lamb osso bucco for your main course. Wash it all down with a couple bottles of Dilirium or La Fin Du Monde. And you can’t go wrong with the crepes… with ice cream. You can never go wrong with ice cream.

L-O-V-E

Valentine’s Day… probably the worst holiday (if you can even call it that) on the calendar. A day where restaurants, flower shoppes, and candy stores charge ridiculous prices for the same stuff they’d sell any other day of the year for far cheaper prices.

…and I AM SUCH A SUCKER FOR VALENTINE’S DAY!!

What can I say, I’m a hopeless romantic. However, I’m not one to go for the fancy dinners, huge bouquets, and boxed chocolates. Give me more credit than that! I’m obviously the kind of guy that would prepare a home cooked feast, buy flowers from the flower district downtown and arrange my own bouquet, and bake my sweets from scratch. In fact, I’ve done all these things and more (so if there are any guys out there that need some ideas, holler at me cause Lord knows I won’t get a chance to put them to good use).

I’ve had but one Valentine in my short life and I can honestly say that preparing for that day was actually just as fun, if not more so, than… well, spending it with my Valentine. That’s not to say that my date went bad but if you know me, you know that I love being creative. I’m definitely artsy fartsy 5000, whether it be in the form of cooking, baking, drawing, or photography… whenever I am being creative I am happy.

It’s gonna be hard for me to top that Valentine’s Day from a few years back but at the rate I’m going, I’m not due to have another Valentine for quite a while. At least I can say that I won’t be spending this upcoming one alone: I have two female friends that are single so we all decided we’d be each other’s third wheel, a ménage à trois if you will. We’ll be watching this…

And probably be eating a lot of sugary goodness like this…

Heart Cake - white vanilla frosting covered white cake with red velvet cake crumbled on top

There's a surpise in the middle!

Probably drinking a lot of this…

Shot this at El Vino Wine Shop in Venice...

and complimenting it with this…

Brix Chocolate for Wine

On a side note, there’s a friend of mine on Facebook that always makes it a point to give me verbal jabs to each and every Facebook status message that I post that she thinks refers to a girl. I think that she thinks I’m a player. I think that she thinks I’m heartless. I think she thinks I’m a womanizer. For what reasons she thinks these things? I have no clue as she doesn’t even know me all that well. Dating in LA is already hard enough as it is, please don’t make it any harder for me. And people already think I look like an asshole… please don’t make them think it’s true. Sure I’ve been an asshole before but the girl was CRAZY and DELUSIONAL. If I like you, I promise I am anything but an asshole.

Picture below is from a recent shoot I did with my friend Natanya and her boyfriend Rick… they’re in LOVE. =)

Helping Haiti

Yesterday I posted an entry on the 80/20 rule.  There’s no better way to implement that rule than now by de-cluttering your closet (and your life) of clothes you never wear. Donate all your gear to one of the following:

The American Red Cross - www.redcross.org
CARE - www.care.org
UNICEF - www.unicef.org

And all you bloggers out there… via Paisley Petunia

You may be seeing ways to help all over the internet. But if you are still looking for ways to contribute, consider re-blogging this and donating below.

Please help spread the word.

Donate through Salesforce.com and they will match your donation (up to $200,000)! http://www.salesforce.com/haiti/

Text “Yele” to the number 501501 to donate $5 through your cell phone bill. Donations go to the Yele Haiti Foundation (formed by Haitian musical artist and dedicated humanitarian Wyclef Jean)

*thanks to Stephanie’s cousin Michele for the information on Salesforce’s matching gift*

80/20 Rule

It’s taken me a while to write my first post of 2010. The past two years have been uber tough for me on several different levels and so I’ve taken it upon myself to de-clutter my life. So it was no coincidence that I came across the Pareto Principle aka the 80/20 rule. Vilfredo Pareto, an Italian economist from back in the day, observed that 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the population. Throughout time, economists have applied the 80/2o rule to everything in life.

Take your closet for instance. What in your wardrobe do you wear all the time? Or applying the 80/20 rule, what 20% of your clothes do you wear 80% of the time? Pareto in full effect. I didn’t realize it at the time but I effectively applied the 80/20 rule when I sold off most of my 300+ pairs of shoes and now own less than 30 pairs. You have no idea how much easier this will be for me when I move or how much room I now have in my closet.

What about the people in your life? Who are the 20% of the people in your life that you interact with 80% of the time? Or what about the 20% of the people in your life who make up the 80% of your troubles? As you can see, the 80/20 rule can apply to everything. Reassess those people around you and those you let in your life and you’ll realize that you can be so much more happy when you focus on the good 20% and don’t get so caught up with the bad 20%. And don’t worry about distancing yourself from the rotten apples cause as Dr. Seuss says, “Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”

What else can you apply 80/20 to? Work? Facebook? Love? Figure it out and you’ll get so much more done in life.

I remind myself of the 80/20 rule on a daily basis so that I can get shit done. This blog is a prime example. I know I wanted to update the look and style of it and I didn’t want to write and blog posts until then. When I started to update it, I noticed that a lot of the formatting was off in old posts and that made me not want to update until I corrected all the formatting issues. I was just creating barriers for myself because I am so OCD. But how many of you out there even care that a lot of my old posts are not formatted correctly or that the photos are not centered? Exactly.

The picture below is of the man, the myth, the legend… ABUELO. He’s actually my good friend’s grandpa but I call him abuelo cause he’s the only grandpa I know and he is such a badass. He is a master builder and can build practically anything. In fact, he built his home in Mexico with his own two hands. He’s 94 and he’s still as active as ever. I’m not sure if he’s familiar with the 80/20 rule but I can only assume he is cause from my observations, he doesn’t waste any time when it comes to getting shit done. He’s 94! Horale…

Personal Training Client Handbook

I’ve been sitting on this post for over a month but with 2010 around the corner, I thought it’d be appropriate to finally post this piece on being a good client when seeking the services of a personal trainer.  More likely than not, your New Year’s Resolution probably includes losing a certain amount of weight, exercising however much more, and eating food that is not ice cream and cookies (ps. warm ginger molasses cookie + vanilla bean ice cream = heaven).

You all know that I am not a big fan of personal trainers.  I have my own reasons but if you Google “personal training horror stories” you’ll understand why.  However, if you do opt to go with a personal trainer the relationship goes both ways.  Not only should the trainer be amazing, but so should the client.  Here are some guidelines:

  • Show up on time… and by on time, I mean at least 5 minutes early.  My time is your money.  If you’re paying me by the hour, why wouldn’t you want to make the most of every single second?
  • Show up ready to work… meaning, have your shoes on and tied if you’re opting to wear them for our session.  Have your water, towels, mats, and whatever else you’re planning on using ready and within reach.  If you’re running late, don’t take your precious time moseying on over to our workout location.

Beatrock | Label Launch Party

I’ve had the pleasure of calling Fatgums a good friend since my first year in college and he is definitely one of the most creative and inspiring people I know.  Long story short dude went from, being a design major to pre-med to UCLA Med School to being one of the sickest beatmakers in the game.  He is hands down the hardest working man in hip hop, dropping album after album and beat after beat, day in and day out.  Peep his site for free albums, samplers, and to purchase his music!  Help support independent artists!

What more can this guy do?  How about starting his own label, Beatrock Music?  Here are the shots from the Beatrock Label Launch/The Counterparts Album Release party at Dakota Lounge in Santa Monica.  Here are a few of my favorite shots from that night (more can be seen on my Flickr stream and even more are found on Beatrock’s site)…

(Pictured are emcees Bambu, Kiwi, and Rocky Rivera)

Updated 12/27/09 @ 10:26pm – Fatgums just sent me this… Bambu – The Queen Is Dead. Fatgums on the beat… now, I done told y’all he was ill… but you ain’t listen!!  So click on that link… and LISTEN!

Tattoo Session | Rebecca

When you’re looking at and editing hundreds of photos everyday, you get tired and things often become a blur.  I took these way back in March and came across them on Christmas Day while organizing the files on my MBP.  Nine months of not looking at them instilled new life into these photos so here I am sharing them with you.

I met my friend Rebecca at El Clasico Tattoo and Art Studio in Echo Park when she had a touch up session scheduled.  I was pretty excited as I’ve always wanted to capture tattoo artists performing their artwork.  Folks always ask me how come I don’t have any tattoos.  A big reason is because, I don’t want to disrespect my mama and pops as they wouldn’t want me to get inked.  But the main reason is because I don’t want to be a wrinkly 83 year old dude with tattoos.  Who knows… I might end up getting inked on a whim, Lord knows I dig the pain.  And if I do, it’s gonna be a big piece… none of this barbed wire/tribal arm band stuff for guys.  No offense to guys with barbed wire/tribal arm bands.
